Danitra Vance, (19-1994)

A native of Chicago, Danitra Vance originated the roles of Delia, Girl and Missie May in Zora Neale Hurston’s Spunk at the Crossroads Theatre in New Jersey for which she received an Obie Award. She said of her multiple roles in Spunk, "Some things you just read and know there’s something in there. It gives you pride and dignity...it’s part of your heritage, the dignity you bring to the characters is your own, as compared to acting in skits," ms. Vance won the NAACP Image Award for acting as well as DramaLogue’s Ensemble Acting Award as part of the original company (New York, Los Angeles, London) of The Colored Museum, which is now part of the PBS’ Great Performances video library. Other theatre credits include La Mama E.T.C., Life on the Water and Victoria S.F. in danitra Vance & the Mell-O-White Boys. Television credits include Miami Vice, the Trying Times’ production of Hunger Chic by George C. Wolfe, The Talent Pool, Ha! and Sisters, as well as being a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Films include Sticky Fingers, Limit Up, War of the Roses, Little Man Tate and Jumpin’ at the Boneyard. Ms. Vance trained at the Webber Douglas in London, England.
