Jude Narita (Actor/Writer) 

Performs excerpts of some of her most memorable internationally-toured solo shows

Jude Narita (Actor/Writer) is best known for her award winning one-woman show, Coming Into Passion/Song For A Sansei, of which she was actor, writer and producer. PASSION ran a total of 24 months in Los Angeles, and was honored with a Drama-Logue Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics' Circle Award, a JIMMIE from AAPAA (Association of Asian Pacific American Artists), and a VESTA Award from the Women's Building of Los Angeles. Narita's other plays are: Celebrate Me Home, about racism and the mysteries of love; With Darkness Behind Us, Daylight Has Come about the effects of the Japanese American internment camps during WWII on three generations of Japanese American women; and Walk The Mountain, an anti-war play exposing mis-information about the American war in Vietnam. Narita was the first artist to perform at the Singapore Repertory Theatre's Inauguration Season. She also taught a writing/acting workshop to Singaporean women, culminating in an ensemble play of original material written and performed by Narita and the Singaporean women, The Tiger On The Right/The Dragon On The Left - II. In Los Angeles, Narita had taught a free acting/writing workshop to encourage other Asian actresses to create their own original material, which resulted in the first The Tiger On The Right/The Dragon On The Left. The other actresses and Narita won Drama-Logue Awards for Performance and Narita also won a Drama-Logue Award as Producer. Narita received the 2004 Integrity Award from the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival, the 2003 "Best Actress" Method Festival Award for the film Nisei Farmer, and a 2003-04 C.O.L.A. (City of Los Angeles) Fellowship. She has been awarded eight grants from the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Dept., one National and two California Civil Liberty Grants, a Brody Foundation grant, a Rockefeller from UCLA Asian Americna Studies, a Living History Grant, and a Recognition Award from University of Santa Barbara where she was a Raznick Distinguished Lecturer in the College of Letters and Science. Narita is the president of PAAWWW (Pacific Asian American Women Writers--West). Narita is proud to be executive producer of the highly acclaimed independent feature film, BANG starring her daughter Darling Narita, who was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. She recently costarred in SLAMBAM, written and directed by Darling, who was also the lead in the film.
