Cynthia Lee

"ruddha (rude, huh?)" (Dance)

North Indian rhythmic dance syllables transform into nonsensical English gossip and idiosyncratic postmodern movement that suddenly shifts into classical Kathak.

Cynthia Lee creates choreography that bridges the worlds of American postmodern dance and North Indian classical kathak.  Cynthia collaborates with artists from diverse backgrounds, including Taiwanese visual artist YaYa Chou, new music/jazz composer David Cutler, and West Sumatran choreographer Ery Mefri.  She is a member of the Post Natyam Collective, dedicated to creative and critical approaches to South Asian dance.  Cynthia’s choreography has been shown throughout Taiwan, India, Indonesia, and the United States at venues such as REDCAT, the Painted Bride Arts Center, Taman Ismail Marzuki, and Chandralekha’s SPACES.  The recipient of a 2002-3 Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, Cynthia was also invited to participate in the 2006 Asia Pacific Performing Arts Exchange and the 2008 Indonesian Dance Festival.   Influential teachers include Simone Forti, Eiko & Koma, Kumudini Lakhia, Bandana Sen, and Anjani Ambegaokar, and she holds an MFA in choreography from UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures. www.cynthialinglee.com
