gossip and idiosyncratic postmodern movement that suddenly shifts into
classical Kathak.

Cynthia Lee creates choreography
that bridges the worlds of American
postmodern dance and North
Indian classical kathak. Cynthia
collaborates with artists from
diverse backgrounds, including
Taiwanese visual artist YaYa
Chou, new music/jazz composer David
Cutler, and West Sumatran
choreographer Ery Mefri. She
is a member of
the Post Natyam Collective,
dedicated to creative and critical
approaches to South Asian
dance. Cynthia’s choreography has been
shown throughout Taiwan, India,
Indonesia, and the United States at
venues such as REDCAT, the
Painted Bride Arts Center, Taman Ismail
Marzuki, and Chandralekha’s
SPACES. The recipient of
a 2002-3 Thomas
J. Watson Fellowship, Cynthia
was also invited to participate in the
2006 Asia Pacific Performing
Arts Exchange and the 2008 Indonesian
Dance Festival.
Influential teachers include Simone Forti, Eiko &
Koma, Kumudini Lakhia, Bandana
Sen, and Anjani Ambegaokar, and she
holds an MFA in choreography
from UCLA's Department of World Arts and
Cultures.
