"The Fanny Lou Hamer Story"  

This historical theatre piece, accompanied with song and music, pays homage to well-known Civil Rights activist, Fanny Lou Hamer, in her perilous struggle to gain the vote for African Americans in Mississippi.

mZuri is an actress, singer, and writer.  Her vivacious presence began on cabaret stages including New York ’s Danny Skylight Room,  and La Cave on First. Word began to get around about the tall beauty with the flashing eyes and dazzling smile. Soon she found herself in New York concert productions that included Legendary Women in Music at Camy Hall,. Handy, the 125th birthday celebration for W.C . Handy at Lincoln Center . mZuri lived in Paris , France and Rome , Italy . There she made her singing debut and worked as an extra in films. Upon returning to the U.S. mZuri was cast in the hit Film Sankofa. Her poignant portrayal as the slave” Lucy” brought her wider public notice.She saw an interview with the great civil rights pioneer  Fannie Lou Hamer on Gil Noble’s TV journal “Like It Is”.  Determined to honor this heroine mZuri promised to write a one woman show about this larger than life figure. In January of  2001 she performed the world premiere of “The Fannie Lou Hamer Story” which she wrote, to a “standing room only” crowd at New York ’s Nuyorican Poet’s Café. Since then she has performed her show at dozens of universities, churches and venues. mZuri is currently touring with the show and supporting a voter’s registration drive in which audience members can register to vote before or after the performance. A critic once wrote, “When Ms. mZuri sings God smiles and angels flap their wings”….
